Cider & Black Pudding

I should have gone to bed, but I headed to the Restaurant late on, and some Monk brewed cider and a black pudding sandwich later I'm glad I did!

Camping in the Lake District tomorrow? Should be a good weekend after a long week!

iTunes Audio Compression Works!

Here's the amount of space the new version of iTunes gave me on my little 8Gb iPhone. Nice!

Ice T & the power of the internet!

Goto bad, mkay

Last time I used a goto I was 14. So by my reckoning, I stopped just before Jurassic Park came out. Fortunately.

How to spot a programmer

Awesome thread on stackoverflow. Here's my favourite comment so far:

A bit off-topic but fun: Walk up to a (busy) colleague (programmer) and just say Hello and behold:

Blank stare - you can almost see their minds unwind as they swap out their current short-term memory to persistent long-term storage - then a moment of REM - rapid eye movement - before they awake from their thoughts completely, and first then they are capable of processing input from you.

I respond like that all the time!

Merits of a Meritocracy?

I refer you to the priceless exchange between Robert Wilson, former director of Fermilab, and Senator John Pastore, during a Congressional hearing over the value of building a new particle accelerator. Pastore is sure there must be something about the machine that can be steered towards a defence app:

Pastore: Is there anything connected with the hopes of this accelerator that in any way involves the security of this country?

Wilson: No sir, I don't believe so.

Pastore: Nothing at all?

Wilson: Nothing at all.

Pastore: It has no value in that respect?

Wilson: It has only to do with the respect with which we regard one another, the dignity of men, our love of culture. It has to do with, are we good painters, good sculptors, great poets? I mean, all the things we really venerate and honor in our country and are patriotic about. It has nothing to do directly with defending our country except perhaps to make it worth defending.

A Letter to GQ

Hello GQ,

I'm having a little trouble trying to read Bruno Maddox's latest piece here:

http://www.gq.com/magazine/toc/201002/index_20090916

I'm trying to read it after having read some of Bruno's columns on Discover Magazine's website, but it seems that some of the links to stories on GQ.com are greyed out and not working for me. My computer is working fine, and I don't seem to have this problem on any other website, so I figured you'd want to know about this.

Now I must admit, for a moment I had a nagging suspicion that this was something to do with you trying to sell me paper. You do have a lot of adverts for that on your website. That can't be the case though; after all, it is 2010 and as content providers running a business, people having access to your content must your number one priority.

Anyway, I'd love it if you could fix that link for me? Apologies if you've already fixed it while I was typing this message. I hope that's the case. I mean, I can't be the only one trying to read it, and don't you charge advertisers for advertisements when people read things on your website? That's what Google do, and look how much Google make from their website. They don't even have writers!

So please let me know once that link is fixed, as I'd quite like to read Bruno Maddox's piece. I mean, not enough to go and buy that issue of GQ, obviously. The place I buy magazines from is a long way from my house, and I'd quite like to read it without having to go there as it's raining right now. I'm not even entirely sure they'll have the February issue in stock as you seem to be selling the April issue and it's still March where I am. Plus, I think they sell the February issues in January not February? I'm not sure.

(Also, you've put Shia LaBeouf on the cover and to be perfectly honest that makes me think there may be other things in there I'd rather not look at.)

But you never know, if I get to read Bruno's Piece and it's as interesting as the one he did for the Discover Magazine website, then I might buy a copy of GQ next time I see his byline on the cover. Just as long as it's not next to a picture of Shia LaBeouf. I seem to remember you had January Jones on the front cover a few months ago? She is lovely. I bought that issue, as I was getting on the train and you can't beat reading a real magazine now and again can you? Especially when they have January Jones' front on the front.

Well, I seem to have rambled on for long enough now, so I'll close by asking if you could please let me know once you have your website fixed? I'm looking forward to reading Bruno Maddox's piece. When I'm finished I might even click on an advert if it piques my interest. Possibly. I understand that gives you money you can use to pay Bruno for his writing?

Not if it's one of those flashing ones though. I never click on those.

Yours Expectantly,
Daniel

I've Scored Tusker Lager!

I haven't drunk this since I was in Africa, and they're selling it 100 yards from my front door.

Delicious, curiosly honey tasting, cold lager.

Get in ya dancer!
